Associate Dental Surgeon

Dr Somini Chandy qualified from Myscore University in 1989. Before joining our team at Herbrandston in 2007, Dr Chandy worked largely within the hospital settings of India, Ireland and England (Chalmsford and Oxford).  She trained in Oral Surgery and Periodontology and carried out research in the link between gum disease and heart disease.  She was awarded her Masters in Medical Science for this as well as obtaining her FDS at the Royal College of Surgeons, England in year 2000. Her refined clinical skills combined with a gentle, holistic approach ensure that our patients enjoy consistently high quality pain-free dental care.

    Associate Dental Surgeon

Dr Alex Portela is a dentist enthusiastic about her ongoing professional training. She loves anything that she feels can help our patients and is cultivating special interests in cosmetic dentistry and endodontics (root treating failing teeth). Not a tall person she is well suited for the low beamed surgery in which she works. Ironicaly she has a dog that is almost as tall as she is.

    Senior Dental Nurse

Annette Trott is our longest serving dental nurse and has been working with Dr Boulcott for many years. A very able person, Annette has undergone specialist training in the fields of dental X Rays and dental sedation. A happy, caring person, Annette takes great pride in her abilities to relax all our patients ensuring that their visit is as pleasant as possible. Annette is a fountain of knowledge and seems able to 'mother' anyone in need. A superb asset to this Practice and a friend to all our patients.

With all our recent nurse additions we now refer to her as 'matron' as her job is to ensure all surgeries are overseen for cleanliness, cross infection control, training and competence within all aspects of dental care that we at Herbrandston are uniquely suited to provide.

Petra joined us as a trainee nurse and is working hard to gain qualifications in dental nursing. A happy lady with great personal experience of service, some of our patients may have recognised we stole her from Neyland post office! She is a wonderful addition to our practice and tends to work with Mark or on reception.

Becca has also recently joined us as a trainee nurse and aspires to passing her dental nursing exams in due course. A bubbly, sweet natured girl becca is someone who engenders trust in all our patients.   She is a great asset who loves her new puppy: a little Jack Russel. She is either to be found working with Alex or on reception.

    Junior Qualified Nurse

Cheryl is our most recent recruit having qualified and registered with the General Dental Council this year. No longer under training and feeling confident she arrived in this practice only to find that our practices and quality of care are so different from her previous experiences she feels as though she is starting all over again!

A very able dental nurse she is quickly coming to terms with her new working environment and has become one of the team being the next most senior nurse after Annette. A lovely girl, she is very easy to tease and 'wind up' - especially by members of staff who should know better - Petra!

Cheryl will most often be found in surgery 2 working with Somini.

    Dental Technician

Mike Hargreaves is our dental technician - it is Mike who crafts our denture work making each piece as lifelike, comfortable and as functional as possible. Few dental surgeries in the UK now directly employ a technician - they usually work in laboratories outside a practice. Here at Herbrandston we work closely with our technician, in surgery if needed, to ensure the quality of the final product. Any subtle changes to ensure individual character to a prosthesis such as a denture can be carried out chair side with the patient able to comment and approve. Our dentures are the very best: being made of the best materials and the most natural looking teeth. Everything to ensure realism and accuracy of aesthetics.

    In Memory

Karen Boulcott (BA Hons), the late wife of Dr Mark Boulcott, sadly died in road traffic accident on 07 Oct 06.  She was killed by a drunken driver on the A40, Pembs, and is missed by both patients and staff alike.  Karen was a lovely lady who worked tirelessly to help her husband start up the business of Herbrandston Dental Health Practice in 2004. Karen was our Practice Supervisor and we miss her.

We leave this picture of her here as a tribute to the love we all had for her. You will still hear her voice on our answer machine and in that capacity she still works with us. She is always in our thoughts.  God Bless.

Note: the term 'Doctor' is a 'courtesy' title used by the medical profession. The true title of 'Doctor' should be reserved for those with a PhD qualification or 'doctorate'. Historically qualified medical physicians were referred to as doctors but unlicensed surgeons were regarded as simply 'Mister'. This is the reason why medical doctors loose the title of Doctor when they become surgeons and why dental surgeons have never been known as doctors pre 1994. The tern 'Doctor' referring now to dental surgeons can be a bit confusing in the UK because of this historical difference of social heirarchy. In Europe and America, all dentists have a 'Doctorate' of dental Sciences and so it is really a British oddity that UK dentists were never previously Doctors.

Now, in line with the rest of the World, UK registered dentists can use the courtesy title 'Doctor' but it should be understood that none of the dental surgeons working at Herbrandston (as for the vast majority of dental surgeries in the UK and around the World) are either Medical Doctors or hold a PhD qualification.

This being said, all dental surgeons at Herbrandston prefer to be referred to by their first name and we invite all our patients to do just that. Likewise, unless you have objection, we would call you by your first name. This gives a more informal friendly atmosphere and we would be rather viewed as equals rather than having a title: Doctor or otherwise.
