"Over The Counter" Whitening Kits

Can They Damage Your Teeth?

Having a brilliant white smile is something that many people crave, especially with the Hollywood smile being held in such high regard!

We have spoken before about how tooth whitening can only be carried out by a dental professional in the UK, as the bleaching agents in the gels we use can cause potential damage to the mouth and soft tissues if used inappropriately.

However, this restriction has only been limited to products containing hydrogen peroxide (or carbamide peroxide) as their whitening agent.

The Rise Of Home Kits

Recently new bleaching agents have been developed that use ingredients that have not been restricted under the current registration one of which is Phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid (or PAP if that is too much of a mouthful).

PAP has been found to quite an effective whitening agent, with fast results so you would think it would be the best way to whiten your teeth?

Unfortunately, early research has shown that PAP actually etches the enamel itself in its whitening process, potentially damaging the tooth structure itself leading to early fillings and sensitivity.

You can see examples of the research and damage that this etching causes here

Hydrogen peroxide products have been thoroughly tested, their concentrations limited and all treatment is carried out by a trained professional. With these other easily available kits the current lack of research into their effects and the un-regulated way that they are used can cause potentially significant damage to your teeth.

Are They Worth The Risk?

We know that whitening can be expensive, but this cost covers the expertise and safety you can expect to receive when you get your teeth whitened by a professional in a clinical environment.

A bargain in the short term with one of these currently unregulated kits can potentially cause long term damage to your teeth and expense in the long term.

If you are every unsure we are always here to help and offer advice on your tooth whitening options.

Our goal is for all of our patients to have amazing healthy smiles without any risk for damage in the treatment we provide!
